Providing quality education to girls in Douala, Cameroon

Friday, August 31, 2018

Ruth and Olivia were delighted to welcome Nathalie Elong from our Cameroonian partner organisation, Port Bell Academy, in London earlier this month.

Nathalie, a doctor working in public health, and her team participated in training and clinics from Wonder Foundation when Ruth and Olivia visited Douala (where Port Bell is being built) and Yaounde last April.

Inspirational Nathalie, Adeline and other women came up with the idea of Port Bell in the face of a shortage of affordable, quality education for girls in Douala.

Whilst primary schooling in Cameroon is free, most parents end up paying considerable amounts. With up to 90 children packed in a classroom, few if any books, lack of computers or access to online learning, children often learn very little at school. Parents are forced to spend money they don’t have on out of school tuition (books are expensive and hard to find in Cameroon). Private schooling is out of reach for most families.

Port Bell Academy is an exciting initiative that Wonder Foundation is happy to support. We were delighted to continue learning from Nathalie on her visit to London.
